Action Policy Overview:
The Sustainability Office at the Islamic University of Madinah aspires for the University to become a leading educational institution in the field of environmental sustainability and climate action by strengthening its societal and educational role in addressing the impacts of climate change and mitigating its consequences, in alignment with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the principles of responsible climate action, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Office also seeks to integrate sustainability concepts into the University’s operational, administrative, and academic processes.
The Sustainability Office focuses on promoting the achievement of a set of integrated objectives, the most notable of which are:
- Reducing carbon emissions resulting from campus activities by encouraging improvements in operational efficiency and the rational use of resources.
- Enhancing energy efficiency by promoting the gradual adoption of renewable energy sources in buildings and facilities.
- Promoting sustainable mobility patterns both on and off campus for students and university personnel.
- Strengthening environmental awareness and active participation among students, staff, and faculty members.
- Encouraging the integration of sustainability concepts into academic curricula, programs, and research activities.
Energy and Buildings
- Encouraging the development of lighting systems within university buildings using high-efficiency technologies, along with expanding the use of automated control systems to reduce unnecessary consumption.
- Encouraging the consideration of environmental sustainability principles in the design of new buildings, including improving the use of natural lighting and ventilation and reducing unnecessary thermal loads.
- Monitoring reports related to the implementation of periodic energy efficiency reviews in university facilities and linking their results to continuous improvement plans.
Waste Management
- Encouraging waste segregation at source within university facilities and activating partnerships with specialized recycling entities.
- Monitoring the expansion of digital transformation to reduce paper consumption in administrative and educational processes.
- Promoting a culture of waste reduction and reuse among university affiliates.
Water Conservation
- Encouraging the use of water-efficient cleaning equipment and operational systems within the campus.
- Encouraging the installation of smart sanitary fixtures that reduce water wastage in restrooms.
- Seeking to adopt native or drought-resistant plants in green spaces, in a manner consistent with the climate of Madinah.
Sustainable Transportation
- Encouraging low-emission mobility patterns within the campus, including walking and shared transportation.
- Introducing vehicle-sharing initiatives and organizing shuttle transportation for students and staff.
- Participating in the study of introducing environmentally friendly transportation solutions within the future campus development plans.
Education and Scientific Research
- Supporting and encouraging the integration of sustainability and climate change topics into academic courses across various disciplines, in a manner appropriate to the nature of each academic program.
- Supporting applied research that addresses climate change mitigation and adaptation, particularly in the fields of energy, water, and sustainable urban planning.
- Encouraging research collaboration with local and international entities related to sustainability and climate action.
Community Engagement and Awareness
- Empowering student initiatives and activities related to sustainability and environmental action.
- Organizing workshops, scientific meetings, and awareness campaigns to promote positive environmental behavior within the university community.
- Expanding community partnerships to serve environmental and sustainability issues in Madinah.
- Setting measurable performance indicators for each pillar of the plan and submitting periodic reports to senior management.
- Aligning performance indicators with the requirements of international sustainability rankings.
- Reviewing the strategic plan for climate action periodically to ensure it keeps pace with technical and legislative developments.
