The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the Islamic University was established in 1432 H (2011 G) to satisfy the needs of the development plans in the Kingdom, in general in Al-Madinah. Mechanical Engineering is an exciting field of engineering because it encompasses all engineering aspects of almost everything that moves in the universe. Mechanical engineer address and solve some of the world’s most pressing issues and problems such as energy, seawater desalination, health engineering, environment, robotics and advanced manufacturing, transportation on the ground, in the air, in and under water and in outer space – just to name a few from a long list of challenges facing our society. The vehicles that we drive or ride on, the airplanes that we fly in, the ships and submarines that we travel in and the space ships that take us to outer space and other planets are mostly designed by Mechanical Engineers.
What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is an exciting field of engineering because it encompasses all engineering aspects of almost everything that moves in the universe. We invite you to explore how you might contribute to advancing the frontiers in the field of Mechanical Engineering. As a mechanical engineer you can be trained to help address and solve some of the world’s most pressing issues and problems such as energy, health engineering, environment, robotics and advanced manufacturing, transportation on the ground, in the air, in and under water and in outer space – just to name a few from a long list of challenges facing our society. The vehicles that we drive or ride on, the airplanes that we fly in, the ships and submarines that we travel in and the space ships that take us to outer space and other planets are all mostly designed by Mechanical Engineers. However, that is just a subset of everything that Mechanical Engineers create. Mechanical Engineering is the innovative application of science and technology to the design, production, and operation of mechanical devices, machinery, and systems. Mechanical engineers are good at designing things, especially complex items like racing yachts, robots, sawmills, and airplanes.
They also design industrial machinery and processes, which make other things, such as paper mills or car assembly plants. Mechanical Engineering also involves the efficient use of energy in processes such as a heating or refrigeration system.
Studying Mechanical Engineering
Engineers must not only have a good understanding of the engineering sciences but also be able to communicate effectively and to apply their knowledge and experience to new problems. One area covers the relevant engineering sciences – mechanics, mathematics, dynamics, fluids, heat transfer, thermodynamics, industrial engineering, control systems, solid mechanics and materials. A second area based on design teaching applies these sciences to practical problems. A third area covers essential aspects of professional engineering such as economics, management, and sustainability, entrepreneurship issues. In addition to these core areas, students have the opportunity to specialize in their final year by selecting a number of elective courses. A particular feature of our specialization is the strong emphasis given to design and project work, in which students acquire the ability to apply their knowledge to the development of new products and develop skills in teamwork and communication.
Graduates Employment Opportunities
Mechanical engineers employ their knowledge and skills in a remarkable range of worldwide industries. The graduate of the Mechanical Engineering Department represents a potential candidate to become one of the key elements of any design, development or manufacturing activity in the industry and the society. Graduates of the Department find good opportunities in the industrial sector to work in the following fields:
